AI-Generated vs AI-Assisted — the difference that decides if your music will monetize

Streaming platforms separate AI music into two categories with radically different treatment: AI-Generated (reach cut, removal risk) and AI-Assisted (handled as regular content). The difference lies in significant human processing applied afterward.

Technical definition of the two categories

AI-Generated refers to works produced entirely by artificial intelligence without significant human creative intervention. Example: you prompt "gospel song about faith" on Suno and upload the result directly.

AI-Assisted refers to works in which AI was a raw input or tool, but substantial human creative work is added — mixing, mastering, editing, original stem layering, timbre curation, sonic identity tuning. The result is considered human-AI co-authorship.

Spotify treatment

Spotify is the most aggressive platform against pure AI. In January 2025, it removed 75 million tracks identified as spam or AI-generated without artistic merit. The internal system detects repetitive fingerprints typical of algorithmic generation.

Additionally, tracks with fewer than 1,000 plays in 12 months do not pay royalties. Since most pure AI-Generated content doesn't go viral, it loses monetization regardless of category.

AI-Assisted, on the other hand, passes filters as regular content — the human processing fingerprint breaks the original algorithmic signature.

TikTok treatment

TikTok created the "AI-generated content" category in 2024 with mandatory declaration. Tracks declared as AI suffer algorithmic reach reduction on For You Pages.

The internal Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) system detects similarity across uploads. When 50+ users upload variations of the same Suno/Udio generation, the algorithm silences all but the first.

This is the crucial point: HUMANIZE processes each track with unique parameters (random seed, sub-percent jitter), making every upload have a distinct fingerprint — escaping ACR and maintaining organic traction.

YouTube and YouTube Music treatment

YouTube has required declaration of "altered or synthetic content" since 2024. Pure AI-Generated receives the "Created with AI" label visible to viewers. AI-Assisted has milder declaration.

On YouTube Music, tracks declared as pure AI have reduced preferential distribution in algorithmic playlists. They aren't removed but lose natural discovery momentum.

Apple Music, Deezer, and others treatment

Apple Music, Deezer, and Tidal request declaration at upload through distributors (DistroKid, Tunecore, RouteNote). Some distros increased filtering in 2024 and reject mass uploads identified as pure AI-Generated without artistic merit.

AI-Assisted tracks generally pass, especially when there's evidence of human processing (waveforms different from the originally generated, own master, added stems).

Legal dimension in Brazil — Law 9.610

Brazilian Copyright Law (9.610/98) doesn't yet have specific text about AI, but the consolidated interpretation is:

  • Creative work requires "creation of the human spirit" (art. 7)
  • Pure AI does not create authorial work — no human spirit
  • Significant human processing (mixing, mastering, curation) constitutes autonomous creative contribution
  • Whoever did the processing is entitled to co-authorship/co-production (arts. 5 VIII b and 7)

This is precisely why HUMANIZE's 5% co-production royalty model has legal basis: the system performed real creative contribution recognized by Brazilian legislation.

How to migrate from AI-Generated to AI-Assisted

Technical migration involves 5 minimum steps:

  1. Sub-percent pitch shift — displacement of -25 to +25 cents breaks pitch fingerprint
  2. Light time-stretch — factor 1.04-1.07 without altering perceived tonality
  3. Human stem addition — vocal layer, real percussion, or instrument solo
  4. Forensic mastering — LUFS -14 with professional true-peak limiting
  5. Sonic identity curation — conscious choice of timbres and EQ

Each step adds measurable human contribution and shifts the original algorithmic fingerprint.
